Dr. Gary Warren Zelles

Dr. Gary Warren ZellesDoctor Gary Warren Zelles, born on September 17, 1935, in East Orange, NJ, died peacefully at home in Nevada City, on August 13, after a long battle with cancer, with family at his side. He is survived by his wife Nancy; sons Brian, Craig and Dale; daughters Allison and Traci; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and brother, Dr. Rodger Zelles of Ship Bottom, NJ. Dr. Zelles attended Rutgers University and George Washington University School of Medicine. He began a military career as an intern at the Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA, and later was trained as a flight surgeon at the Naval School of Aviation Medicine, Pensacola, FL. He served his residency in general surgery at the Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, PA, where he was certified by the American Board of Surgery. There were a variety of duty stations in his career, including the USS Intrepid and the Carrier Air Antisubmarine Group 56, aboard the aircraft carriers USS Enterprise and USS America, at the Naval Air Stations in Norfolk, VA, and Pensacola, FL, and at the Naval Hospital, Camp Lejeune, NC, where he was chief of surgery and achieved the rank of captain. He and his family moved to California in 1976, where he completed his military career as a general surgeon at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital. During the 20-year course of his military service, Captain Zelles earned a National Defense Medal, two Meritorious Unit Commendations, and a Vietnam Service Ribbon. After retiring from the Navy, Gary continued practicing with The Permanente Medical Group at Kaiser Hospital, in Oakland, CA. He also taught general surgery at UCSF Medical Center. He retired from medical practice in 1996 and moved from Pleasanton, CA, to Kitty Hawk, NC, where he enjoyed his favorite hobby of deep sea fishing. In 2001, he and Nancy moved to Nevada City, to be near family and friends and to enjoy woodland serenity, woodworking, kayaking, and gardening. A private ceremony will be held at the family home, and memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society

Nancy Ruth Zelles
1938 - 2012

Beloved sister, mother, and grandmother, Nancy Ruth Taylor Zelles passed away in her home on Tuesday Dec 4, 2012. Nancy was born in Saratoga Springs, New York on August 22, 1938. She attended Douglass College in New Brunswick, NJ and was a graduate of UC Berkley where she received her B.A. in English. She was a devoted wife to her husband Dr. Gary Warren Zelles for 49 years until he preceded her in death from cancer in 2008. Nancy was a vibrant woman who loved her Airedale dogs, cooking, knitting, and kayaking. Her letter-writing, story-telling and hollandaise sauce were legendary. Nancy endeared all those who met her with her engaging conversational manner.
